General Description

The UC Davis Campus Recreation Lifeguard position supports the academic mission of UC Davis by providing outstanding recreation and leisure experiences and fostering a culture of engagement, inclusivity, and community. The Aquatics Unit goals are to provide experiences that encourage leadership and teamwork, develop competence in recreation skills, make new friends, and enhance participant's connection to the broader Davis community.

Head Lifeguard Duties

UC Davis Campus Recreation Lifeguards guard as part of the facility safety team at the UC Davis Rec Pool and at the Schaal Aquatic Facility. Head Lifeguards will oversee lifeguard operations during various programs both at the Rec Pool and at Schaal Aquatics Facility such as Lap Swim, Rec Swim, Aquatic Club Practices, and special events. Head Guards are responsible for ensuring that programming occurring at the Rec Pool is up to the standards and expectations set forth by the Aquatics Coordinator. Head Lifeguards are responsible for acting as a professional lifeguard while on stand, as well as performing secondary lifeguard responsibilities such as maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the Rec Pool facility. Head Lifeguards are also responsible for the set up and take down of appropriate equipment including but not limited to lane lines, backboards, umbrellas, lifeguard chairs, deck chairs, etc. Additionally, Head Lifeguards are responsible for implementing and completing various tasks designated by the Aquatics Coordinator such as Lifeguard Observations, various Red Shirt (audit) drills, etc. Additionally, Head Lifeguards participate in regular meetings and training to ensure that they are meeting the benchmarks set by the Aquatics Coordinator. Head Lifeguards are expected to assist in leading staff training and meetings, and, in the case that they hold their Lifeguard Instructor Certification, they are expected to assist in running Lifeguard Certification and Recertification classes. Head Lifeguards are expected to participate in cashier training, and act as an Aquatics Cashier when necessary.

Aquatics Employee Expectations

UC Davis Campus Recreation Lifeguards are responsible for working a minimum of 2 shifts per week (6-10 hours per week). Head Lifeguards must be able to work mornings, afternoons, nights, and weekends. Head Lifeguards are responsible for attending and actively participating in mandatory monthly in-service training in order to maintain lifesaving skills. Head Lifeguards are required to be recertified once per year in order to upkeep skills and certifications. Head Lifeguards are expected to interact with all other Aquatics Staff members professionally and with respect. Head Lifeguards are direct reports to the Aquatics Coordinator and are required to abide by any expectations set by the Aquatics Coordinator. 

Mandated Reporter

The UC Davis Lifeguard is a mandated reporter for known or suspected child abuse and requires that a statement acknowledging the requirement to report child abuse be signed by law.

 

Conduct

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space. UC Davis Campus Recreation has a zero tolerance policy for harassment in any form. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or ability to obtain Lifeguard Certification before hiring.
  • Ability to demonstrate lifeguard pre-course skills test prior to the interview process.
  • Ability to work a minimum of 6 hours per week.
  • Ability to work for a minimum of 2 quarters.
  • Applicants must be able to show proof of valid Lifeguard Training Certification, First Aid for the Professional Rescuer, and CPR.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver up to 50lbs.
  • This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
  • Must be able to interact effectively with customers.
  • Must be able to respond effectively and confidently to an emergency and oversee the scene with attention to the care provided to the patron, crowd control, and the incident report.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and be able to oversee cash handling.
  • Ability to perform rescues based on Red Cross Lifeguarding certification requirements.
  • Must be able to work mornings, evenings and weekends as necessary during the school year.
  • Must be able to give availability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during summer sessions.
