DESCRIPTION:

The Internship and Career Center (ICC) provides career-advising services to all students and administers a variety of internship and career-related programs. Our mission is to support students in career exploration and in gaining valuable workplace skills prior to graduation. 

Engineering and Physical SciencesPeer Advisors provide assistance to students seeking direction for career exploration related to the following program areas:  Computer Science/programming, Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, Data Science/Data Analytics, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Cognitive Science, Materials Science and many more. *Note: applicants can be any major, but should have career goals related to engineering and physical sciences.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Provide drop-in advising to students on topics such as getting started in career exploration, finding internships/jobs, Handshake navigation, resume review, cover letter review, developing networking strategies, and career fair preparation.
  • Provide initial resume/cover letter feedback to students through online Resume Review+ system. 
  • Present ICC workshops on common advising topics. Occasionally present tailored workshops to student clubs.
  • Welcome visitors, students, employers, and campus staff using strong customer service skills and strong oral and written communication.
  • Take an active role in outreach activities of the ICC which may include marketing/publicity, public speaking, tabling, information sessions, career fairs, and occasional projects/events that may occur outside of 10am - 4pm.
  • Collaborate with other Peer Advisors on projects, workshops, panels, and databases.
  • Attend mandatory training (see below) and weekly staff meetings.
  • Perform basic clerical duties as needed.
  • Must maintain student and alumni confidentiality at all times, per FERPA guidelines.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be an enrolled UC Davis undergraduate student who has completed at least one year at UC Davis by position start date.
  • Must be a registered UC Davis student until at least June 2025 who can commit to the Peer Advisor role for a full academic year.
  • Knowledge of ICC and campus resources with the ability to refer students to these resources as needed.
  • Previous experience with customer service, peer advising, office work, or related experience.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate self-motivation, creativity, innovation, and initiative.
  • Excellent listening skills and respectful communication with diverse students.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database programs) and skills to operate standard office equipment (e.g. printer, multi-line phone).
  • Ability to present to small and large groups.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Major in College of Engineering or any Physical Sciences discipline
  • Extracurricular experiences related to Engineering/Physical Sciences, including academic or personal projects, internships, and/or club experiences

MANDATORY PAID TRAINING SESSIONS:

 (1) Must attend Spring Training:

  • Must be available for up to 15 hours of paid training during Spring Quarter, including a mandatory training session on April 3, 2024. Training hours will be scheduled throughout the Spring Quarter and will be a combination of asynchronous and scheduled sessions.

(2) Must attend Fall Training:

  • Must be available in person the week of September 16-20, 2024 for mandatory Fall Training. Confirmation of exact times/locations will be provided during the interview process. Regular work shifts and/or welcome events start as early as September 20, 2024.

 

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND HOURS:

  • Position begins April 2024 for limited Spring Quarter training hours. Regular weekly schedule occurs September 2024 to June 2025.
  • Usual schedule is 8-10 hours/week through the academic quarter between 10 am and 4 pm (flexible around class schedule)
  • May require occasional evening or weekend hours discussed in advance
  • Pay Rate: $16.50 / hr

WORK STUDY:

ENVIRONMENT:

This position is expected to work in person in South Hall for the academic school year. Work environment includes sitting at a computer station for significant periods of time.

Onboarding and Background Checks will be completed prior to mandatory training sessions for all new UCD employees (at no cost to employees).
