Student Assistant

September 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The people at the university are very friendly and easy to talk to about anything. When working as a student assistant, students are offered access to a little bit of how the university operates and how things keep moving on time. While working there you learn about resources that are offered to students that are covered by your tuition that can take advantage of and benefit from. There are people from very different backgrounds that you meet all the time that you would never meet anywhere else. They are willing to share their experiences to help you learn and grow while you work there.

What I wish was different

The workload is different depending on what team you are assigned to for the semester/year. So a student assistant when working with one team may learn about some things that another student assistant may not know about. There are things being done to reduce this that are now in effect, but I would like other possible student assistants to know about this.

Advice

When working as a student assistant, do not be shy to ask about time off for exams, midterms, finals that are coming up and are important to you. The staff is very flexible with scheduling time off or switching days you work to make sure you do well in your courses.

Assistant researcher

May - August 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I liked being paid through the Wayne State system on academica. It was simple, easy, and streamlined with my everything else I do at Wayne.

What I wish was different

I wished it didn't take 9 days to receive a payment for each pay period. While I would get paid eventually, it was a little annoying having to wait so long to receive the money I worked for after a week and a half.

Advice

Continue to expand your network. You never know who you'll meet. You can do this by attending workshops, seminars, approaching potential employers whenever you can, and more. I found my job through personal connections, and I wouldn't have without talking to the people I did. I really believe in the cliche that it's about who you know, not necessarily what you know. Opportunities to connect to others should be taken more seriously, and every conversation with someone could turn into a new experience.

Research assistant

June - September 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I liked getting to better understand what the research process is like in chemistry labs. It was very interesting to have a real life experience with products that had therapeutic effects rather than working in labs in college that don't have real-life applications a lot of times.

What I wish was different

A lot of the time was spent waiting for reactions and other things to happen so there was a lot of down time which led to not many results. It is hard to only be in a lab for 10 weeks so I wish there would have been more time to gather more data and results. This would have helped in writing my SIP.

Advice

Don't be afraid to email different professors at different universities to see if they have room in their lab! I emailed the PI because I found his research interesting and he ended up having space for me.

Advice

It's a great job for a student because you get to meet and develop relationships with the people who run the school that you go to.
