What I wish was different

The work load.

Advice

Be prepared for people to not know as much as you and that others may not always do as you ask. You may need to keep people on the right track. So, being able to talk to people is very important. It's also very important to remain organized.

What I liked

I like the flexibility of the hours.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had known about this job opportunity my freshman year. It's a super easy and convenient and would've been perfect freshman year.

Advice

I would tell people to branch out and try multiple things. My freshman year was very lackluster compared to the variety of things I do now - research, weekly volunteering, a job, and several clubs.

Student Assistant

June - September 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the hands-on experience of bench work and learning how the scientific method is used in current areas of research.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd spent more time reading the literature. I was taking classes at the time so I already felt booked, however taking the time to read the literature would have given me a much deeper understanding about what it was that we were working towards.

Advice

Take the time to ask people who are currently working in your field of interest what their job is like from their perspective. Find out what they do and don't like about their job situation and see if there is anything that they would have done differently. Lastly, say yes to as many opportunities as you can. You will be busy and you may not think that you will enjoy a specific task, however it is just as important to find out what you do not like as it is to find out what you do like. This is how you can make a more informed decision when it comes to your own career.
