What I wish was different
I would have liked to have more routine meetings with my boss.
Advice
Happily accept any task that is thrown your way and always seek more when you finish the last.

Intern
June - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC
What I liked
I loved the experience that I got with a corporation. They had a mentor program so anytime I had questions I would go to him and meet with him on a weekly basis. They really want you to succeed and will give you the tools to do that. It was a great entry point. They also offer a few locations for interns to choose from.
What I wish was different
I wish there was more communication from the recruiter. A lot was sometimes last minute so it it would be hard if you don’t stay on top of everything and ask questions all the time.
Advice
Look into it even if you don’t think this is something you want to do. There are a lot of different positions that you can apply for that you would be surprised. You can apply for Nuveen , TIAA Bank and I wish I would have known that.

Technology Intern
June - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC
What I liked
Great culture, beautiful campus, really nice people. They were very devoted to developing their interns and the vast majority of us received return offers.
What I wish was different
There was no campus recruiting for Lander of course, everyone else was from very large schools like UNC and Clemson.
Advice
Start applying early. I applied in October and got an offer before the end of the fall semester.

Strategic Sourcing
June - August 2018 • Charlotte, NC
What I liked
I loved the work culture they had there. I was able to fit right in with the different teams of professionals I had the opportunity to work with on various projects. All of the projects I worked on were extremely hands on and relevant to courses that I took in the business school, which was great. My managers were involved with each project I worked on and provided guidance and teaching when I needed it.
What I wish was different
This is something that is uncontrollable of course, but since the internship was over the summer, there were a few times that enough people were out of the office on vacation that it got a little slow at work and there was not much to do.
Advice
I would make sure to talk to and get to know as many of your co-workers while you are there, and continue to stay in touch with them even after you are done with the internship. Also make sure to learn as much as you can from them about their jobs and what they do on a daily basis to broaden your career interests, you might even find out you like another type of job in that department and want to pursue that.

Software Engineer
June - August 2018 • Iselin, NJ
What I liked
I enjoyed how the software development process was handled and I also really enjoyed the people that I worked with. Everyone was very kind and were always willing to help and give advice.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have been placed on a team from the beginning because I spent about 3 weeks waiting for them to place me on a project.
Advice
Do not be afraid to voice your opinion even if you are an intern. Interns come into projects wish fresh eyes and a fresh perspective. Ask a lot of questions and show genuine interest. Be as vocal as possible about anything and everything.

July 2012 - December 2017 • New York City, NY
What I liked
Great Company. Very ethical.
What I wish was different
Wish they were way ahead in the technology curve. I understand that they are not a product or a tech company but I feel they should be nimble to grow fast in the technology space as well so that they become a huge technology leader like none other as they have some of the best financial products.
Advice
Loved it! Prepare well for your interviews!

Actuarial Int
June - August 2019 • New York City, NY
What I liked
I worked with one team all summer, and was able to fully integrate myself into that team. I was included in meetings and big projects. I also gave a research presentation at the end of the 8 weeks on a topic very different from what the team I worked with deals with. This exposed me to different parts of the actuarial field, instead of just one.
What I wish was different
I wish that I was able to work with other teams as well, but considering that it was only a 8 week internship, I was exposed to many different parts of the field even if I did not directly work with them.
Advice
Having a summer internship was a great experience because I got experience corporate culture which cannot really be mimicked in a classroom setting.

Compliance
June - August 2022 • Charlotte, NC
What I liked
This was a phenomenal company to work for. Heavily focused on allowing interns to be hands on and truly learning about the company & specific department you're working in. I truly felt like I was a valued member of my team and everyone was more than willing to offer career or personal advice throughout the summer. The early talent team was also great about ensuring all 300 interns were able to interact and socialize with each other and executives through events like Top Golf nights, setting up a meeting for all of us to speak with our CEO and hosting us at Dave and Busters!
What I wish was different
I made the mistake of living outside the city and commuting to work which I would not recommend.
Advice
If you have the opportunity to apply or accept this internship you won't regret it. Everyone is incredibly invested in your development and want to support you however they can even if you decide it's not continuing at the company post internship. Be open to working with new positions or departments that you wouldn't have considered applying to - I had no idea what compliance really entailed and I ended up LOVING it.

Technology Intern
June - August 2021 • Charlotte, NC
What I liked
My favorite part of the internship was working with the other interns on an Innovation Project and getting an opportunity to present to the firm's senior leaders as our team was in the Top 4. I was working with interns from different departments. It was interesting how everyone was coming up with ideas and solutions that could benefit the project and how their department would be affected by it. Overall, I really enjoyed working with everyone and learned about some of the real-world projects that financial services company works with.
What I wish was different
I wish TIAA had organized more meetings/activities for interns to connect. I was able to talk to a few interns that I worked with for the Innovation Project but, I would have really enjoyed meeting more Technology Interns and connecting with them.
Advice
My advice to future and current interns is that everyone should connect/network with professionals on their and on other teams. I find this highly valuable and helpful as I am deciding on a full-time opportunity. Everyone was willing to help whenever needed. By networking, I was able to understand more about TIAA and the different analyst roles at TIAA. I would definitely recommend everyone to attend professional events and network as much as possible.
