What I liked

The Resource Group provides an all-encompassing view of the supply chain process in health care. Regardless of the area of healthcare interns are interested in, the intern managers work to cater the internship to these interests. There are endless project options and opportunities, creating an exciting, fast-paced environment. The associates are kind and always willing to provide advice, whether it be about a project the intern is working on or personal career advice. This was an invaluable experience, and would benefit anyone wishing to go into business or healthcare.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be prepared to ask questions. Supply chain analytics does require a degree of specialized knowledge, so those without a background in supply chain, like me, will have a lot of questions along the way. This is why it is especially valuable that everyone at The Resource Group is willing to help and share their insights.

What I liked

The analytics internship experience with The Resource Group was one of the best preparation for having a full-time position. During the internship, I had the ability to customize projects to my own interest. This is what initially attracted me to this internship opportunity as opposed to the others. My background and interest lies in the clinical side of healthcare, and I was not ready to fully give it up. This internship made it extremely easy for me to work on various projects with Seton Hospital clinicians to optimize inventory, shadow processes related to vendor management and works towards reducing the overall cost of healthcare, while improving outcomes. I had the opportunity to collaborate with interns nationally to come up with 3 best practices in the area of public health. Additionally, my co-workers and intern manager were beyond helpful in exposing me to different executives and even work on some projects with them!

What I wish was different

Advice

I would advice the candidates to approach this internship with a very open mind. Take on few projects that interests you, but work on some that are out of your comfort zone as well! This will enable you to show off your skill-set and will help you determine your areas of strengths and weaknesses! Be able to openly ask questions and communicate your concerns with your co-workers and managers. Letting them in on your thought process showcases your critical thinking skills, but also helps you get different perspective on the problems that you are trying to solve! Overall, this internship is very valuable if you choose to make it so.

Analyst Intern

What I liked

I completed my internship with The Resource Group during the summer of 2016. Right before graduation in December 2016 I received a full time offer and have been with The Resource Group for almost 3 years at this point. During my internship I enjoyed the ability to work on projects at the local health ministry and with the other interns at other locations virtually. I was also able to analyze spend, propose and implement a conversion from one supplier for another yielding in around $30k of spend. I benefited greatly from internship which I now view as a 10 week interview and on boarding session that allowed me to hit the ground running when coming on as a full time associate.

What I wish was different

I've been able to watch the internship program develop over the last 3 coming up on 4 summers and I am truly amazed at how much the program has grown. Thinking back to summer 2016 I think the intern orientation that is hosted in the St. Louis office during the first week would have been really awesome. While we did have an orientation it is now much more robust. The Resource Group truly values the feedback provided each year by the interns and is continuously working to grow and improve the program.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Take advantage of down time to expand your knowledge and skills by exploring documents or practicing using tools available like excel, tableau, G-Suite. Get as much exposure to all facets of supply chain and healthcare that you can. Healthcare is complex and so is supply chain. Use this experience as an opportunity to assess what you are truly interested in and rule out what may not be the best fit for you.
