What I liked

I liked working with the Policy Office. I had the opportunity to work on a lot of different issues! I spent time working on my own, as well as lots of time in meetings. Everyday was different. But at the same time I had a focus over the course of my time there and I appreciated that as well.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I valued the experience and was able to learn a lot from everyone I interacted with.

Advice

Be willing to ask for more work, or ask to dive in more to any subjects that interest you.

Engineering, Scientific, & Technical Intern

June - August 2018 • Harrisburg, PA

What I liked

In this position, I got to utilize and expand upon the GIS skills I already possessed. I also improved my problem-solving abilities and gained more experience working as part of a diverse team of individuals. The projects I completed outside of the office were equally valuable and made the summer more interesting than what I imagine it would have been without any component of fieldwork.

What I wish was different

The main aspect of this job that I wish I could change was to have been able to begin work earlier in the summer. By doing this, I wouldn't have missed as many introductory elements or field trip opportunities that were offered to the other interns.

Advice

Be confident in your abilities and be honest during the interview process about the extent of your skill set. Admitting that you don't know everything is okay as long as you show that you're a competent person who has an interesting in learning more.

ESTI Intern

May - August 2019 • Erie, PA

What I liked

I liked the hands-on experience I received and the day-by-day tasks I was given that enhanced my knowledge and understanding of bridge construction.

What I wish was different

I would have like to started my internship earlier so I could have seen the total reconstruction of the bridge as opposed to the small window of construction I saw.

Advice

I would recommend to always be attentive as there are plenty of moving parts during the work day and I encourage other students to work at sites so they receive a more hands-on experience.

Engineering Scientific and Technical Intern

May - August 2018 • Montoursville, PA

What I liked

PennDOT is a great company to work for if you want to experience a portion of public sector employment. The atmosphere is very relaxed, but you learn a lot from this experience. This is definitely worth interning for the summer for, and I would do it again.

What I wish was different

I wish the job hadn't been as driving intensive, as I felt I was wasting a lot of my time driving here and there.

Advice

My advice is to go to the PA jobs site on the government page, and apply as early as possible. My phone interview occurred the morning before my chem final in the fall, for a job in the summer. Look early and apply early.
