I got to experience the work that occurs in our government on a daily basis. I got to work in the United States Capital and it was amazing!
What I wish was different
I wish that I would have been paid.
Advice
This was a great opportunity and I would recommend it! Even if you are not really involved in politics it is still a great internship!

Intern
May - August 2019 • Lincoln, NE
What I liked
I enjoyed learning about the inner workings of our nations legislative branch. I got to experience how a congressional office operates on the constituent outreach side of things. The district office is more concerned with constituent services while the D.C. office deals with the legislative process. I enjoyed the individual projects I was assigned to work on. They all dealt with real world cases and issues.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have come more prepared to work. You really have to stay current with the news because constituents call in often asking about this or that in the news. I definitely would have liked to come to work each morning more prepared and current with the news cycle.
Advice
I wish I would've got involved more in meetings in the office. I kind of shuffled my feet in the door and did not insert myself when I was welcomed. I thought because of my "intern" title I was there to sit down, shut up, until someone needed water or coffee. But that was not the case. The staff always wanted me involved which came as a shock to me. Don't be afraid to get involved in meetings when you think you have an idea that may help.
