Family Preservation and Reunification Intern

June - August 2018 • Richmond, KY

What I liked

I loved the work I was doing. The in home visits that I shadowed allowed me to see the systemic issues that DCBS involved families face. It helped me practice my motivational interviewing and counseling skills. I got to see families situations and communication improve. I was also exposed to parenting education that were evidence based. Most importantly, I became aaware of the health disparity of access to mental health treatment in rural, low income areas of Kentucky.

What I wish was different

I couldn't have had a better experience.

Advice

I would share that to really not be afraid to use your voice. One component of the internship was that we had a team consultation meeting every week and at first I had an issue being vocal about my suggestions for families. However, when I overcame that my experience became even richer.

Behavior Health Tech

May - October 2020 • Hays, KS

What I liked

Valuable experience working with children and adolescents (5-17) in an inpatient psychiatric setting, there were many moments when you feel like you got through to a kiddo and made a real difference in their future.

What I wish was different

Stable leadership, More Career Minded co-workers, less groupthink (cliquey), the company seems to place profits above it's espoused mission at times, letting kids remain in the facility too long and you can see a lot of progress lost quickly

Advice

If you are not prepared to be worked HARD, often without adequate support; Do not take this job!! Unless you MUST gain some experience or it has been more than 12 months since I posted this. Be prepared for a rollercoaster type of experience that will have you laughing, 'awwing', crying, and pulling your hair out from one moment to the next.
