I loved the environment, the people, the diversity, the work I was asked to do and the fact that I was able to assist with many tasks from different departments.

What I wish was different

I wish I the internship would have lasted longer than it did.

Advice

Very great experience in a corporate type of setting.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Shadowing both in-patient and out-patient settings really helps figure out your specific medical niche.

Volunteer

May 2019 • Riverside, CA

What I liked

Volunteering in the NICU, I am able to see babies on a weekly basis and try to help nurses by grabbing things for them and stocking.

What I wish was different

Nothing :)

Advice

Be prepared to see things because things can get crazy in a hospital setting.

Greeter/Escort

September 2018 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

I like being able to interact with people and making their hospital visit a little less stressful. I am one of the first interactions they encounter, so it is very important that I set the right tone.

What I wish was different

Sometimes members come with really specific questions. It is hard to navigate them to the correct place. In that case I would just ask for help right away, instead of flipping through pages of information.

Advice

I would say that being attentive is very important. If you have to do anything personal, step back. The goal is to make everyone feel welcome.

Financial Analysis and Consulting intern

June - August 2019 • Oakland, CA

What I liked

Really supportive boss who wanted to make me comfortable with being uncomfortable.

What I wish was different

I wish the workforce was younger. Some of them seemed to be very satisfied in their position which from the outside looking in, employees looked complacent.

Advice

If you want more work, want to learn a specific skill. Speak up ! Close mouths don't get fed !

Volunteer Intern

August 2019 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I liked being able to actually meet and work with the patients while shadowing the head doctor.

What I wish was different

I wish the paperwork process had been quicker so that I could have started earlier. It was a lengthy and confusing ordeal to go through with HR in order to start working with the doctor.

Advice

Start early and do something you are passionate about because then you will be able to collaborate with like minded individuals who want to help you reach your goals.

Data Science Intern

June - September 2019 • Pleasanton, CA

What I liked

My coworkers were all very kind and helpful. Kaiser has been putting a lot of effort into improving their internship program. They provide resources to network with other interns/employees and improve your professional self.

What I wish was different

Most of the people on my team worked remotely. I never even saw the faces of some of the people I worked with. I wish I had the opportunity to have face-to-face interactions with my team members more often.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, especially the dumb ones. When you are an intern, you don't have as much of a reputation to maintain compared to if you were a full-time employee. People will expect you to ask for help and they won't judge you if you don't know how to do something, even if it's trivial. If you are stuck on something it's better to ask for help than struggle on your own and try to solve it all by yourself.

General Accounting In

May - August 2019 • Rockville, MD

What I liked

Heading into my sophomore year, I was able to get a clear and good understanding of the Accounting field. I was able to have hands-on experience with managing physical inventory and income statements, and had the opportunity to speak to a multitude of CPA's for tips and guidance.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more knowledgable going into the internship so I could've helped the company in a greater way.

Advice

Really put forth your best effort into everything that you do, weather it be entering journal entries or simply photocopying papers. If your assigned task is to just to print out and go through invoices, print and go through those invoices better than anyone else in the office.

Research Intern

June - August 2017 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

The mentors are amazing and truly want you to succeed. The content was also interesting as I was taught both context and how to find information for myself. There were also many opportunities to network and meet amazing people (and learn about amazing places).

What I wish was different

It was a little unorganized at times. Having a clearer plan and schedule would be helpful, as well as a possible mediator between us and the medical advisor.

Advice

Make a timeline for yourself and stick to it.

Student Intern

May - June 2019 • Oakland, CA

What I liked

Great, fast-paced environment with endless opportunities for learning. An example of a well-run hospital with a strong focus on prevention and effective approach on public health. Got to view multiple brain and cardiovascular surgeries and got very realistic insights into what a career in medicine is like.

What I wish was different

I wish I had asked more questions and that there had been a little more guidance, but overall I appreciated how this experience pushed me to be more independent.

Advice

Look in your network to see if you have any connections to Kaiser, and consider starting as a shadow first to build up experience with Kaiser.
