Interacting with kids is such a fun, surprisingly creative way to take a break from school and academics. You get to be goofy, laugh, and play around which is something that I think a lot of adults would benefit from doing more often.

Advice

Find a job doing something you love. It makes it so much easier to show up and do your best work.

Residential Advisor

What I liked

I liked being in close proximity to students and hearing their experiences before becoming full-time students, specifically incoming freshmen, at Georgetown University. I had the opportunity to live in a residence hall with them, offer advice on academic success and adjustment, and be a helpful hand. The Residential Advisor experience is definitely one that I would recommend to those who are interested. The job also contributed to my personal growth as an adult and student here at Georgetown. Lastly, it allowed me to be collaborative because I worked with a team.

What I wish was different

I only wish that the program had been longer than five weeks.

Advice

My only piece of advice would be to develop a strong sense of patience. This experience tested me many times, and it challenged me to listen and think a little more profoundly about situations that call for it.

What I liked

I worked as a counselor for the SFS IR summer camps for high school students. I liked being able to learn about IR topics from Georgetown and DC experts, work with students, answer questions about college, and live on campus near my friends. Also, the program coordinator was highly organized, so my job was pretty easy.

What I wish was different

I wish the hours hadn't been so long, but I enjoyed being busy.

Advice

Definitely arrive on campus with everything you'll need for the week and get as much sleep as you can during the week; it's a packed schedule.

Project Associate and Resident Advisor

What I liked

Working at Futures (Red House), I got to be in a work environment that was very innovative and creative. For Community Scholars Program, I practiced people-skills and developed many lasting relationships with my residents.

What I wish was different

I couldn't ask for better summer jobs. I was given endless amounts of support for both Red House and CSP. If anything, CSP became very hectic during certain periods, but RA's had more than enough support from the AMAZING staff at the CMEA.

Advice

Red House: get to know the staff, find a project to work on that inspires you, and have fun! It's a super fun and relaxed environment. Community Scholars: prepare to push your limits and practice many skills at once, but mostly-- embrace each moment. This experience will change you!

Neuroscience Lab Intern

What I liked

I loved the experience and knowledge I gained, while also getting to know all my coworkers. The fact that I was helping in research that will lead to medical developments, later on, was mind-blowing. It also allowed for great networking opportunities and allowed me to form relationships with a lot of graduate students and professors who do their own research.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to go Monday through Friday, but I was also taking summer classes.

Advice

Definitely need to bring a lab journal and take a lot of notes. It is an advanced science and you get out of it what you put in, especially since I was one of two undergraduate students there and everyone else was either Ph.D. or soon to be medical students.

I absolutely loved working in Professor Silva's lab! The schedule was flexible, and the grad students working in the lab were immensely helpful and kind. Would recommend.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to professors if you're interested in a position! I had never taken a course with the professor who served as my PI, but I thought that her research sounded interesting and sent an email—and it worked. You'll likely get some rejections along the way, but persistence pays off.

Make sure to always be doing something productive in the lab. The principal investigators love seeing research interns who are actually interested in what they are helping to study.
