Quantumvest

Equity Analyst Intern

May - August 2022 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

This internship with Quantumvest was great in terms of breaking into the world of finance and wealth management. From day one, we as interns got exposure to the inner workings of a successful advisory firm, from client procurement, to actual portfolio management, to learning about fundamental and technical analysis techniques that are utilized in this space to make investment decisions. My knowledge of investment strategy, as well as what it takes to run an advisory firm was day and night following my internship with Quantumvest.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to hear more about how previous interns succeeded within their role at this company.

Advice

As long as you are willing to work hard, and ask plenty of questions, you are given you the tools you need to make this internship one that will allow you to learn & thrive. You will get from this internship what you put into it.

What I liked

This was my first professional experience in the finance industry. I am an atypical case as I actually found the company through twitter and made conversation with the CEO to see if I'd be a good fit. So, off the bat, I like that the company was willing to give me a chance even though I didn't go about the hiring process the "normal" way. I enjoyed all the other guys that were in here as well. Everyone is on the same mission so having a good group of guys doing the same work as you puts you in the right headspace. I learned a lot about the business but moreover received personal mentoring on how to be a better version of myself, which is invaluable coming from someone who has the results I want in my career. As the saying goes, I don't take advice from people less successful than me.

What I wish was different

nothing

Advice

Be ready to work hard. It a fun environment but remember the mission. You will get along with the other guys and work together, and make valuable connections for down the road.

Advice

Risk management is the most critical part of trading - making sure capital is conserved and not at large risk of being lost naturally makes it much more likely for a trade to be profitable.

What I liked

This internship has prepared me for a successful career in finance. Going into this internship I didn't know much about the industry. If you are looking at entering the investment space or becoming a financial advisor/planner you will learn concrete skills that will benefit you. I had little experience in investing and now I can chart stocks and am able to analyze various investments. Working for the CEO and President was great. There is a comprehensive learning platform that teaches you technical analysis. The interns participate in a trading simulation where we can apply the knowledge in a realistic setting. This is fun but also teaches you how to manage a portfolio. I got to meet clients and gain valuable relationship building skills. I feel like I am ready to begin my career in finance and understand how to get clients and keep them. I highly recommend this experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had this experience sooner in my college career.

Advice

Ask questions and be curious. This is an opportunity for you to learn many tricks of the trade. There is a lot to gain from this experience so dive in, have fun, and keep a good attitude.

What I liked

Not only did this internship serve as a key stepping stone to obtain my first paid internship in the Finance world with PwC, but I also gained lots of invaluable experience about portfolio management and client interaction within the Wealth Management division. Coming into this internship, I had limited knowledge about how a private wealth management firm was run, as well as limited knowledge about client interaction and portfolio management. During my time with Quantumvest, I learned about various technical and fundamental indicators that help with entering and exiting trades on various securities like stocks and ETFs directly from the CEO of the firm. This type of mentorship is truly unique, and I can confidently say that shadowing Taylor on his day to day tasks on top of the mentorship he provides is an experience you will get no where else but Quantumvest. Furthermore, I gained in depth knowledge about how to field new clients for the firm, as well as maintaining interaction with these clients. Most importantly of all, though, I feel like I've learned a lot about how to carry myself as a person going forward. Taylor is a great mentor and has taught me a lot about how to be professional, be punctual, and be great at what you do. All in all, this internship has been great for me both personally and professionally.

Advice

Be receptive to criticism. You will make mistakes as an intern, but it's how you react to these mistakes that truly matters. Also be willing to work hard, and you will gain a network of connections that will serve you a lifetime. Its like being part of an elite club of like minded individuals in finance, who will help you get your next internship or even job.

What I liked

At my time with Quantumvest I liked the ability to learn form both the president and CEO as they taught me about sales and trading. We went through a trading program that taught technical analysis and presented on multiple stocks that looked like they could be good in the short and long term. We also worked heavily on sales in which we would call up perspective clients and try and help them with their retirement.

Advice

I would advise those looking at this internship to be ready to work hard and be willing to learn.

What I liked

During my time at Quantumvest, I truly appreciated the opportunity to take on hands-on projects, especially in creating presentations for multinational conglomerates. This gave me the chance to apply what I’ve learned in a practical way while gaining a deeper understanding of what goes into preparing for high-level client interactions. Being able to sit in on client meetings was also incredibly valuable, as it helped me learn more about client relationships and how to build trust and provide tailored solutions. I also really enjoyed the culture at Quantumvest. Having the chance to work closely with the CEO / Senior Portfolio manager & President & Portfolio manager gave me unique insights into the financial world, including how to use industry-leading platforms to spot market trends and use technical analysis to understand them. These experiences not only helped me build my technical skills but also gave me the confidence to contribute to discussions about strategy and performance. Advice

Stay open to learning and be willing to take on new challenges, even if they feel outside your comfort zone. This experience is a great opportunity to grow, and mistakes are part of that process.

What I liked

The equity analysis internship role at Quantumvest is a fantastic way of breaking into finance and greatly developed my soft and technical skills when it comes to investment management and finance. Client interactions combined with equity analysis gives the whole package when it comes to building a foundation for financial knowledge. Being able to compete with the other interns through the portfolio management game and apply the financial knowledge you learn is also a great way to solidify the knowledge you learn. Also being able to talk daily with Taylor the CEO and founder is a one of a kind opportunity. However be sure to go above and beyond to truly take advantage of the role.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I had a great time at Quantumvest.

Advice

Be sure to go above and beyond to truly take advantage of the role as it is only a couple months and 15 hours a week.

What I liked

Before proceeding any further, I would like to preface and say that: most of the reviews on this platform are an accurate reflection of the type of unique experience you will have during internship. Regardless if you are well-versed in terms like stocks, bonds, ETFs, cryptocurrency, mutual funds, etc., by being able to work directly under the CEO and president of Quantumvest, they will teach you the key fundamental aspects of the wealth management as well as techniques such as technical analysis to assess risk management or how to analyze which vehicles to invest in. With that said, prior to interning for Quantumvest, I came in with minimal knowledge about wealth/asset management and very little experience, but during my time here, I have gained an invaluable amount of knowledge and experience on how to approach different investment vehicles. From the very beginning, the interns are exposed on how to run a portfolio through Wallstreetsurvivor, but as the internship progresses, one will learn different aspects of technical analysis (trendlines, support and resistance) that can then be applied towards this simulation and what vehicles one can choose to invest in. Likewise, in my case, I–as well as the other interns–were able to work on a pitch deck that could be presented to a potential high-net worth client–given the knowledge we gained from learning about technical analysis as well as key fundamental indicators (ex: P/E ratio, current ratio). Having said this, up above represents the technical side of the internship, but the other half of this internship involves potential client outreach. Similar to the technical side of this internship, we were also taught on how to communicate with potential clients through the usage of tonality–meaning, how to change tones in different speech patterns. In conjunction to this, myself as well as the other interns were able to listen in on client meetings that gave valuable insight into this industry. All in all, this was a very “hands-on” experience working under the CEO and president–which has not only taught me the skillset in how to analyze trends, but more importantly, how the markets move.

What I liked

What I appreciated most about this experience was the opportunity for hands-on learning and mentorship. The CEO and President of the company generously shared their expertise, allowing me to shadow them during client interactions. This exposure provided me with valuable experience in financial analysis, market research, and investment strategy. I gained proficiency in analyzing financial statements, key metrics, and other critical data, while also learning how to evaluate stocks through charting patterns and market trends. Additionally, I had the chance to create several presentations that demonstrated my understanding of stock trends and the fundamentals of charting. I was also involved in preparing materials for meetings and outreach efforts aimed at potential clients, contributing to the creation of impactful presentations. Furthermore, I participated in earnings calls, where I actively listened, took detailed notes, and highlighted key financial metrics. The experience also required me to stay informed on market news and sector-specific developments, enhancing my understanding of the economic factors that influence different industries. Overall, this experience allowed me to build a strong foundation in financial analysis and client engagement.
